What is the laser? How does it work?
Laser Therapy is a non-invasive modality used for pain reduction and tissue repair. It helps reduce inflammation, ease pain, and quicken the recovery process for a wide range of conditions encountered in clinical setting. The laser delivers photonic light energy to cause change at the cellular level where there may be a dysfunction impeding the recovery process. The light energy is taken up by the cells and used as energy to allow for regeneration by increasing blood flow to area of injury, tissue repair and overall pain reduction.
What conditions can be treated with the laser?
- Low Back Pain and Sciatica
- Neck Pain / Whiplash
- Knee Osteoarthritis
- Hip Osteoarthritis
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Tennis Elbow / Golfer’s Elbow
- Rotator Cuff Tears
- Shoulder / Hip Bursitis
- Car Accident Injuries
- Cervicogenic Headaches
- Repetitive Strain
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Chronic Pain Syndromes
How many Sessions are required?
Expected recovery time varies from case to case. Some patients may notice a reduction in symptoms immediately, or after a few sessions. Whereas as for others, their response to treatment maybe more gradual. For more recent injuries, which as an ankle sprain, the number of sessions maybe less than for a chronic condition such as low back pain sustained for many years. Laser Therapy has shown to have cumulative effect on patients, much like acupuncture. MM Physio recommends having Laser therapy as an adjunct to physiotherapy/chiropractic sessions at least t twice a week for at least six sessions to see positive change.
What can a patient expect during the laser session?
Laser therapy is painless. Certain patients may report a pleasant warming sensation over the area being treated. A laser therapy session can last from 3 to 10 minutes, depending on the area being treated.
For more information on laser and whether or not it is right for your particular problem please ask your MM PHYSIO therapist and they will gladly educate and assist you in choosing the right course of treatment.
